Embrace Content Over Appearance

Have you ever felt that the struggle to impress was a pointless battle and that appearance might not be as great as it is cut out to be? Did you realize that content is much more important than appearance, that the age-old adage it’s what’s on the inside that counts actually holds some merit? I got the idea for this blog post when I was working on this blog. I was stressing out about editing the website, increasing my social media presence, and utilizing more marketing strategies to increase viewership. Yet when I looked at my blog I realized that I hadn’t posted in nearly a month. What was I trying to promote if the content I wanted people to read was incomplete? Yet many of us do this in daily life, we ignore the content and obsess over the appearance. We think like this in numerous situations. We worry so much about our outside appearance when the content of our character is much more important. We stop ourselves from being creative and unique because we are scared of the imperfect appearance of our work.  Heck, I even struggle to write this because I keep thinking how stupidly simple my words probably seem, how posting this will give off an appearance of mediocrity. Yet even if you have a cake that is lopsided and smushed, if you ate the cake it can still fill you up and taste very good. The point is you don’t have to come perfect yet you can still contribute something meaningful. Even if the appearance gives you doubts at least invest in the content, for that’s what you’re truly made of. There will always be a better way you could write, say, or be something but don’t forget that you have to improve from a starting point, as imperfect as that may be. So give the world what you got as you have it now, knowing you’ll get better along the way.

So for those of you who have read this far congratulations, you can tolerate my corny food analogies.  Seriously though, I just want to encourage you, become a person who cares more about content than appearance, because I can tell you from personal experience that prioritizing appearance over content holds your happiness captive. It makes you neglect the substance of who you are to seek approval from a bunch of petty and insecure people. You will never be happy with yourself until you develop yourself, create your art, and pursue your passions. Appearance is worthless without anything to back it up. Let people think bad about you, just do me a favor and prove them liars, become who you feel you need to be, love deeply with your heart, give the world the most honest and imperfect version of you, say to them take it or leave it I’m going to wake up and be the man or woman I choose, not caring what you expect, for dazzling appearance will never hold a torch to the content of authentically good character.
