Water Under the Bridge

Water under the bridge.
Murky, polluted, a stained soul.
Can’t drain the creek anymore than you
Can change the weather.
Desolate twigs clutter the surface.
But it’s over, it’s God’s water now
To clean a dirty lake has no purpose
Just furnish a better one for tomorrow.
Forgive yourself for rummaging through dirt
Under a bridge acid water is not a myth
To be concealed from sunlight
And recall that’s why it feels so cold.
The crags stare back at you like ghosts
Your life choices make you blush
You’re grasping to let go but it’s hard
All water under the bridge they say.
You can’t stop thinking of the mud
The way it cleaved to your skin
Like a soul infected by sin
And all the maggots crawling dear God!
It’s water under the bridge,
Sure hope the road doesn’t sink
Because you don’t want to fall back in.
At least not like this.
